The work of saving lives on our seas and waterways often demands considerable personal sacrifice from those who dedicate themselves to it. Volunteer doctor Adam, stationed at Tower Lifeboat Station in London, undertakes a fifty-mile round trip with each shift. His medical expertise proves vital when the crew is summoned to assist the police in a rescue attempt: a man trapped beneath a pier on the Thames, with the tide rapidly rising. In north Wales, police officer Vinny supplements his duties patrolling Rhyl by volunteering with the lifeboat crew. One summer evening, the urgent sound of the pager calls him out into the darkness to rescue two teenage boys who, chasing a football, have been caught in a dangerous current. Meanwhile, across the Irish Sea in Dunmore East, the lifeboat crew's evening routine is broken by an urgent call concerning a motorboat adrift several miles offshore and taking on water.
