The initial episode finds a retired nursery teacher facing peril as she strives to reach her two dogs, stranded by the encroaching tide. In Wales, a volunteer is swept from a cliff into the sea during an attempt to rescue a spearfisherman suffering from a head injury. Meanwhile, a rescue operation in Blackpool, battling a gale force seven storm, descends into chaos, threatening the lives of all three crew members. Shortly before Christmas, when Cumbria is overwhelmed by torrential floods, the volunteers once again mobilize to rescue families trapped by the rising waters.
