The discovery of publisher Serena Darby’s body in her apartment immediately cast a shadow of suspicion upon J.P. Lange. A former professional baseball player, Lange had previously been acquitted in the murder of his wife, and had subsequently penned a book detailing, with chilling precision, how he would have carried out the crime. Detective Green and Cassady followed a thread of evidence from Lange to Gerald Stockwell, the book's former ghostwriter. However, Stockwell attempted to deflect blame, presenting McCoy and Rubirosa with evidence suggesting a juror in Lange’s trial had been bribed to secure the acquittal.
