Following the assault on Philip and Valerie Messick, Green and Fontana traced the path to Jay Fleckner, a petty criminal. Valerie's testimony, inadvertently delivered, secured Fleckner's release. But soon after, Fleckner was discovered dead, and the detectives realized Bob Cerullo, a family friend of the Messicks, was the one who pulled the trigger. McCoy’s attempt to prosecute Cerullo, however, was met with a chilling threat: the retired police officer would allege that he had deliberately fabricated evidence in past cases, all to pressure McCoy into dropping the charges.
