Traci Sands, a teenager, died while in police custody after her arrest for the murder of the individual who had reported her to child protective services. Rodgers uncovers the cause of death: a benecrine I.U.D. had been implanted, triggering a reaction with Sands' sickle cell syndrome and ultimately proving fatal. Fontana and Green trace the origins of the device to a charitable clinic and a nurse, Gloria Rhodes, who genuinely believes she is acting for the greater good by sterilizing women she deems unfit for motherhood. In court, McCoy confronts former assistant district attorney Paul Robinette, who is defending Rhodes.
