The deaths of three women bearing the same name propel Fontana and Green to revisit the nine-year-old conviction of Leland Barnes, who had shot his wife within a crowded office. With two of the prosecution’s witnesses now deceased and Jack McCoy a target, the detectives grapple with the impossible question: how could Barnes, confined to prison for nine years, have orchestrated someone from the outside to eliminate the very individuals who ensured his imprisonment? Their inquiry ultimately leads them to Leland's two sons, yielding unexpectedly revealing answers.
