Outside a Manhattan restaurant, a defense attorney who had moments before secured an acquittal in a cop-killing case was shot. Detectives began their investigation with the officer's colleagues in the precinct, then moved to his brother, eventually tracing the path to a white supremacist linked to a national network. McCoy found himself confronting the improbable notion that his friend of twenty years – the slain lawyer’s confidant – had been involved in the murder of a Florida district attorney following the defendant’s arrest. He managed to broker a resolution that preserved his friend's integrity, though not without a significant price.
