The murder of a woman initially baffled the police, but the investigation soon revealed the true target: a reporter who had published an exposé on irregularities in the recent senatorial election. Detective Carmichael struggled to persuade the reporter to divulge her sources for the story, which detailed allegations of a fixed vote and tampered ballots, even as the reporter faced imminent danger. Without the source, McCoy and Carmichael found it exceedingly difficult to build a case against the Senator, whom they suspected had connections to organized crime and orchestrated the attack. The case hinged on two thousand missing ballots from the election, pilfered by the mob. The recovery of those ballots sparked a major legal battle over whether they should be counted. McCoy believed the ballots would expose Benton’s motive for ordering the hit, but an appellate court barred their admission, effectively crippling their prosecution. Ultimately, McCoy managed to convince the reporter to reveal her source, who then agreed to testify against the senator.
