The weight of her responsibility often keeps Ms. Smith awake at night. She oversees nine hundred pupils and feels accountable for each of them.
The personal struggles of some students can spill over into school life, and in this episode, Ms. Smith, along with English teacher Mr. Bispham and deputy head Miss Hillman, must devise numerous ways to connect with the children, helping them to leave their often troubling worries behind at the school gates.
The program also introduces Hazel, a local East-Endian and pastoral support worker at Frederick Bremer. She is the first point of contact for students removed from the classroom, often patrolling the corridors with her walkie-talkie, covering as many as five miles a day. Having been excluded from her own school as a child, and carrying the burden of personal family tragedy, she feels a particular empathy for the students she works to support.
