As the school year nears its close, the Year 11 students of Thornhill are charting their course toward futures beyond these familiar halls.
Mr. Burton, their English teacher, is an exceptional figure. At just thirty years old, he holds the position of Assistant Head, and his approach to teaching embraces music, elaborate dress-up days, and even the occasional spirited leap onto tables. This year presents him with his most demanding class yet – a group teetering on the edge of C/D grades – and two students who present uniquely complex hurdles.
Musharaf struggles with a severe stammer, a condition seemingly exacerbated by the anxiety of leaving Thornhill. As he prepares for his GCSE English oral examination, Mr. Burton is determined to employ every possible strategy, no matter how unconventional, to foster his fluency.
Meanwhile, Hannah possesses the potential for top marks, yet her reluctance to remain seated in class consistently hinders her progress. School staff are deeply concerned that she is not realizing her capabilities, wishing she would channel her energy into focused learning rather than seeking ways to evade lessons.
