Franz Leitmayr sought escape from the revelry of Oktoberfest, a sentiment shared by many, yet he was soon drawn back into the heart of the festivities by an unwelcome summons. His fingerprints, it seemed, were inextricably linked to a dead man’s wallet. The deceased had appeared intoxicated, but forensic tests revealed a surprisingly low blood alcohol content. The presence of GHB, however, presented a more complex puzzle. Shutting down the beer tent where the victim acquired his tainted drink threatened to unravel the very fabric of Oktoberfest itself. And with each passing hour, the number of victims continued to rise.
