During a period of national growth, President Lincoln approves the construction of the Union Pacific Railroad, aiming to link the country from one coast to the other. Asa Barrows, a businessman looking for profit, plots to obstruct the railroad's construction. Jeff Butler, a capable manager in charge of the project, becomes caught in a complicated network of rivalries and allegiances as he confronts Sid Campeau, Barrows' manipulative agent and gambler. As the railroad's progress faces challenges, an added layer of tension arises with Dick Allen, Campeau’s associate, who has a shared history with Jeff from their time in the war. Jeff must manage his duties, relationships, and romantic feelings while fighting against those trying to derail this major undertaking.
