In 1871, professional gambler John Devlin runs away with Sandy Poli, the daughter of railroad tycoon Marko Poli. Traveling to Ft. Abercrombie by stagecoach, Sandy, a sharp businesswoman, plans to invest their $20,000 in land near the expanding railroad, hoping to profit from its growth and build a life together on the American frontier.Along the way, they encounter Jim Bender and Bigtree Collins, powerful figures in Fargo who dominate the town. Concerned about their plans to displace local farmers, Devlin resolves to protect the community. On the "River Bird," Sandy and John meet Captain Bounce, an old seafarer. Their river journey is interrupted when two men working for Bender attempt to rob them of Devlin's money.Captain Bounce pursues the robbers to recover the $20,000, leading to a confrontation that will decide the couple's future and challenge the forces threatening their new community.
