The partnership forged last season between Frank McAvennie and Tony Cottee propelled West Ham to their highest league finish yet, third place. The two young internationals combined for 54 goals for the club and are again performing strongly this season; Cottee is well on track to achieve his target of 30. Everton, however, have been plagued by an unusually extensive list of injuries this year. Despite consistently fielding a squad short of its full strength – and without last season's prolific scorer Gary Lineker, who now plays in Spain – they remained undefeated longer than any other team in the First Division during the opening months of the 1986-87 season.
