Second only to the oil industry in its environmental impact, the fashion world faces increasing scrutiny. The Great British Sewing Bee returns this week to coincide with Reduce, Reuse and Recycle Week, with the traditional haberdashery stocked with repurposed textiles and soft furnishings sourced from charity shops. Host Joe Lycett challenges the final six home sewers with a waistcoat pattern crafted entirely from pre-owned garments. The Transformation Challenge sees them tasked with repurposing army surplus into a fashionable garment for a woman. Finally, the sewers must transform old jeans into a bespoke dress. Given the significant pollution associated with denim production, each contestant must create a new, perfectly fitted denim dress from their recycled materials. The winner of Garment of the Week will be announced, and one sewer will be eliminated from the competition.
