The police's most promising lead in locating the kidnapped chauffeur alive rested with one of the armed robbers who had taken him after their heist. However, the immunity the robber demanded came with a steep price: it would all but guarantee his freedom from prosecution in the shooting of an off-duty officer. This presented McCoy with a precarious dilemma. He had to satisfy the police, who insisted on justice for the fallen officer, and the kidnapped man’s wife, who desperately sought any means to bring her husband home.
