The summons from Teresa, his young Cuban lover, confirmed Ulrich Wahl’s deepest anxieties. She arrived at his door, blood-stained and distraught, pleading for assistance. The corpse Chief Inspector Klaus Borowski presented to him was not the victim from his lover’s apartment. It was a security guard, found crushed on a construction site by Wahl’s own vehicle. Borowski noted Wahl's unsettling composure at the revelation. Bernd Ruda, the security guard, had been struck by the car of Thorsten Brück, Teresa’s husband, who also worked for Wahl but had since vanished. Later, under duress, Wahl confided in the inspector: someone was holding him responsible for the guard's death and using the knowledge to blackmail him. But why would Wahl reveal this to Borowski?
