In a Munich family home, two shots rang out. Batic and Leitmayr arrived to find Michaela Danzer deceased and her partner, Daniel Ruppert, unconscious. The six-year-old son of the deceased, Quirin, was missing, along with the weapon used in the crime. During the emergency treatment, the doctor discovered an old gunshot wound scar on Daniel Ruppert’s abdomen, prompting Batic and Leitmayr to investigate an attempted family suicide in Augsburg fifteen years prior. There, consumed by desperation, Ruppert had shot his wife and young son. He alone survived, as did his then seven-year-old daughter, Ella, whom he spared. He then turned the weapon on himself. The revelation that the perpetrator of that past tragedy is now the victim presents a significant challenge for Batic and Leitmayr, compounded by the search for Ella, now a young woman whose path has become obscured by years of therapy. Who fired the shots that night, targeting Ruppert and his new wife? And where has Quirin disappeared to?
