Ann Mitchell, recently fired from her newspaper job, makes a bold final stand. She writes a fictional suicide letter from an unemployed man named "John Doe," detailing societal problems. The newspaper rehires Ann and hires John Willoughby to play the part of "Doe." Initially intended as publicity, "John Doe" gains widespread support and evolves into a political movement. As Ann and her colleagues exploit this unexpected success, they grapple with their cynicism about journalism and discover the real power of impactful writing.
