Ichi, a highly skilled swordsman, finds himself pursued by bounty hunters and seeks shelter in a quiet village. He discovers the village is now controlled by Boss Masagoro, the son of a wealthy merchant rumored to have stolen gold from the shogunate. Masagoro's enforcer, Yojimbo, secretly works for the shogunate while also being in love with Umeno, the merchant's unwilling mistress. Ichi pretends to be the merchant’s masseur and uses the money to buy Umeno’s freedom, which upsets Yojimbo. Seeking revenge, Yojimbo breaks their alliance and tries to create conflict between Masagoro, his father, and their respective groups.
