Nellie Forbush, a spirited nurse from Little Rock, navigates duty and love during World War II in the South Pacific. Working in a military hospital, she meets Emile de Becque, a French planter, and falls for him after a memorable evening. Their relationship faces cultural and social obstacles that challenge their love. Bloody Mary, a philosopher on the island, complicates matters by claiming to be the mother of Liat, the woman Lieutenant Joseph Cable has fallen for. The film blends comedy and drama, showing sailors and nurses enjoying a musical comedy show for entertainment during wartime.
