In World War II, the U.S. built many army bases in Great Britain to fight Axis expansion. This created cultural tensions between American soldiers and British women, especially in romantic situations, causing conflict between the countries. Army Captain John, married, and Helen, an aristocratic woman whose naval husband is at sea, find themselves drawn to each other amidst the war's difficulties.
