Eddie Willis, a struggling sportswriter, gets a chance to work with Nick Benko, a shrewd fight promoter, and an inexperienced Argentinian boxer named Toro Moreno. Though large, Toro isn't a strong puncher and has a weak chin. Benko uses Eddie's respected reputation to arrange a series of rigged fights that build Toro's profile for a championship shot. As Toro gains attention, the current champion, Buddy Brannen, a vengeful and cruel fighter, grows jealous and plans to severely beat Toro in their next fight. Eddie is now torn between revealing the truth about Toro’s ascent to fame or keeping it hidden from the unaware boxer.
