Destiny (1997)

In 12th century Andalusia, the respected Islamic philosopher Ibn Rushd lives with his wife Zeinab and daughter Salma amidst political turmoil and ideological conflict. The region is governed by Khalifa ElMansour, whose sons represent opposing views: ElNasser, an intellectual who admires Ibn Rushd and falls for Salma, and Abdallah, who favors art and poetry and finds refuge with a gypsy family and their singer Marawan. As the Khalifa leans on extremist forces to strengthen his army, these groups target artists and philosophers like Ibn Rushd. This dangerous climate leads Abdallah to the extremists, who manipulate him into plotting his father's assassination. Youssef Chahine presents a passionate story about the destructive effects of extremism. The film explores themes of forbidden love, persecution of art, and family bonds strained by political unrest, delivering a powerful message against those who threaten freedom, creativity, and tolerance.
