In 1950s Czechoslovakia, Ludvik Jahn's life falls apart when a letter meant for his girlfriend reaches the Communist Party and his university, resulting in his expulsion. Betrayed by the system he once served and his former friends, Ludvik is devastated. Years later, fueled by resentment, Ludvik seeks revenge on Helena, the wife of a classmate who accused him.
