In post-emancipation Jamaica, this period drama explores love, loss, and prejudice. Annette Cosway, a former French colonist now impoverished, marries racist Englishman Paul Mason. Following the death of their young son in a fire, Mason leaves Annette and their Creole daughter Antoinette. As Antoinette matures, she understands her future depends on marriage. She develops feelings for an Englishman, Rochester, who resembles her father. The intricate relationships and emotional struggles highlight themes of identity, cultural conflict, and the lasting impact of historical injustices.
