Karen Stone, approaching 50, receives criticism for taking on a younger role in a new Broadway show. Her husband, a businessman twenty years her senior, funds the production and offers a chance to leave Rome due to his health. He dies unexpectedly of a heart attack on their flight. Karen chooses to remain in Rome and rents a beautiful apartment overlooking the city. Her quiet life is disrupted by the Contessa, who introduces her to Paolo. The Contessa has a habit of matching lonely American women with young Italian men, and this chance encounter sets Karen up for a new beginning.
