Anna is a violin teacher, and her husband is a luthier. They have a ten-year-old son, Jonas. At school, Anna mentors a young student named Alexander, believing he possesses exceptional talent. She dedicates herself to preparing him for a crucial exam, determined to prove her judgment. As she focuses on Alexander, she increasingly neglects Jonas, fostering a rivalry between the two boys. Simultaneously, her marriage deteriorates, and she isolates herself from her family, beginning an affair with a colleague, Christian, who encourages her to join a quartet. Following a disastrous joint performance, the pressure intensifies. Anna fixates on Alexander, pushing him relentlessly toward success. On the day of the exam, tragedy strikes.
