During World War I, Dr. Stefano Zorzi works at an Exemption Clinic in Northern Italy, treating soldiers returning from the war and preventing those seeking exemption from faking illness or self-harm. While Stefano tries to heal and send soldiers back to the front, Dr. Giulio Farradio helps them feign illness for exoneration. The two doctors, former friends who secretly compete professionally and romantically for the affections of a strong-willed nurse named Anna, find their lives increasingly complicated. The arrival of the 1918 Spanish Flu epidemic blurs the lines between love, politics, and medicine in dangerous ways.
