Why Do Fools Fall in Love (1998)

In the mid-1980s, three women from Los Angeles, Philadelphia, and Georgia – each with their own lawyer – travel to New York to meet with entertainment manager Morris Levy. They are all fighting for royalties from the estate of their late husbands, Frankie Lyman, a famous doo-wop singer-songwriter. Levy has control of the funds, and the women are determined to claim what they believe is rightfully theirs. The ensuing trial unfolds with flashbacks that reveal different aspects of Lyman’s life through his widows' memories. We see his youthful charm and captivating performances, shadowed by his struggle with heroin addiction. The film interweaves these stories with the women's present-day emotional journeys. As they fight for recognition and money, an unexpected friendship develops between the three women, demonstrating resilience and revealing the complexities of their shared experience.
