A janitor (Charlie Chaplin) is fired after accidentally spilling water on his boss, the bank's chief banker (Tandy). At the same time, a junior manager (Dillon) is desperate to pay off gambling debts and steals from the company vault to do so. The stories of the janitor and the manager unexpectedly connect, creating a tense situation. The film examines fate, social class, and the impact of choices through a series of dramatic events.
