One summer day, a boy hears bells ringing in the mountains near his home. Years later, the mushishi Ginko finds a young girl in the same mountains with branches and leaves growing from her. He discovers she is the mountain's lord, finding it unusual for a human to hold such a position. Ginko meets her brother, who has been searching for her since she vanished during a storm. The story follows Ginko’s journey into the world of the unseen as he tries to solve the mystery of Kaya, the enigmatic girl, and the mountain that is now her home.
