During World War II in Moscow, Veronika and Boris meet by the river and feel an immediate connection, sharing a sense of hope before war breaks out. They promise to meet again before Boris goes to war, but their reunion doesn't happen. Veronika waits for him, holding their connection together through letters. Her life changes when a bombing destroys her home, and she finds refuge with Boris' family. There, she experiences family love and deals with the unwanted attention of Boris' cousin.
