In 17th century Bulgaria, under harsh Ottoman rule, a terrible crime against a shepherd named Karaivan sets off a series of life-altering events. After his wife is murdered before his eyes, Karaivan must decide whether to protect his young daughter, Maria, from the truth or prepare her to fight for justice. He raises Maria as a boy, training her in combat and survival. She becomes a skilled warrior, ready to challenge the oppression of her people. However, as Maria grows stronger, she also begins to question her identity and desires. She must navigate the dangers of 17th century Bulgaria while grappling with her own feelings of duty, vengeance, and love.
