Marquise Eugenia di Maqueda, orphaned and raised by nuns, learns a startling truth on her wedding night to Raimondo Corrao: they are siblings. Their father, a wealthy aristocrat hiding his identity in Paris, reveals this shocking secret in a letter. To avoid scandal, Eugenia and Raimondo decide to pretend they are siblings instead of husband and wife. Raimondo then leaves for war, and Eugenia finds comfort with their family chauffeur. The film explores themes of family, desire, and the difficulties of relationships when faced with unexpected truths and social pressures.
