Set against the harsh landscape of Turkmenistan on the Caspian Sea, the film follows Fyodor Sukhov, a Red Army soldier returning home after years of fighting in Russian Asia. His hopes for a peaceful reunion with his wife are disrupted when he's caught between the Red Army and Basmachi guerrillas.Rahimov, the charismatic commander of a cavalry unit, asks Sukhov to help protect women from Abdullah's harem. Rahimov sends Petrukha with Sukhov on this difficult task while leading the cavalry in pursuit of Abdullah. Sukhov and Petrukha then arrive at a coastal town, only to discover it's also a target for Abdullah and his followers seeking to escape across the border.The story explores themes of duty, loyalty, and survival amidst political upheaval, all within the stunning but desolate scenery of Central Asia.
